Truck Driving on the Road

3 OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES FOR TRUCK ACCIDENTS

Steven Day Aug. 13, 2018

Being in a car accident can be a traumatic and terrifying experience when it only involves cars. Truck accidents involving big rigs and regular sized vehicles can be all the more destructive due to the sheer weight and size of the trucks. Typically, these accidents result in severe injury or death, adding to the roughly 162,000 injury-related deaths each year in the United States. It can be hard for someone to fathom how truck accidents even occur, with drivers having to go through a rigorous certification process and safety classes. Yet, these types of accidents are more frequent than you'd think and are caused by a number of factors.

DRIVER ERROR

It's no surprise that human error is largely at fault when it comes to trucking accidents, mainly because truck drivers are just like any other drivers on the road. The only difference is they drive a much, much bigger vehicle. Unfortunately, truck drivers drive for a living and have to meet deadlines, live in their rigs for days on end, and don't get much sleep. Therefore, they have a higher chance of driving drowsy, drunk, under the influence of drugs, distracted, or recklessly.

IMPROPER MAINTENANCE

Your four-door sedan may require an oil change every 3,000 miles and a tune-up every so often but a tractor-trailer can drive hundreds of miles in a single day for days on end. Because of the extensive use of commercial trucks, they require much more maintenance to keep them road worthy. Bad bracks, a cracked windshield, loss of power steering, and a million other things can go wrong while a commercial truck is barreling down the road.

BAD WEATHER

If you have a hard time controlling your vehicle in heavy rain or snow, imagine how difficult it is for a truck driver to do so. Generally, commercial truck drivers are thoroughly trained to drive in inclement weather but there are some who don't have the adequate skills or experience to do so. That can lead to some poor driving mistakes and accidents. Truck accidents can be much worse than a regular car accident and can cause severe or fatal injuries. If you've been injured from an accident involving a large truck, you should contact personal injury lawyers who can get you the compensation you deserve.
